What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses carefully selected medication to help you feel calm, relaxed, or completely asleep during a dental procedure.

It is particularly well suited to periodontal surgery, where treatments can be detailed and require extended time in the chair.

When is sedation dentistry needed?

Sedation dentistry at Bloor-Yorkville Periodontics may be available to patients who:

  • Experience moderate to severe dental anxiety

  • Are undergoing lengthy or complex periodontal surgery

  • Need multiple complex procedures completed in a single visit

  • Have difficulty tolerating dental treatment while fully awake

Please note: We offer sedation on a case-by-case basis. Your safety is our priority, and our specialists will assess whether sedation is appropriate for you during your consultation.

Preparing for your sedation appointment

  • Share your full medical history: Tell us about any medications you take, medical conditions you have, or allergies of any kind. This information is essential to your safety and helps us select the right sedation approach for you.

  • Follow pre-procedure instructions: Depending on your sedation level, you may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a set period before your appointment. We will give you clear written instructions in advance.

  • Arrange a ride home: You will not be able to drive after sedation. Please have a trusted friend or family member available to take you home and stay with you for a few hours afterward.

  • Dress comfortably: Loose, relaxed clothing makes the experience more comfortable, especially when monitoring equipment is in place.

Types of sedation dentistry options at Bloor-Yorkville Periodontics

Minimal sedation

Minimal sedation uses a low dose of oral medication to take the edge off before and during your procedure. You remain fully awake and aware but feel noticeably calmer. This is a good starting point for patients with mild anxiety who want a straightforward level of relief without deeper sedation.

Moderate sedation

Moderate sedation produces a deeper state of relaxation while you remain conscious and able to respond. Many patients at this level feel drowsy, have little awareness of time passing, and retain minimal memory of the procedure. It is well suited to patients with moderate anxiety or those undergoing more involved treatments.

Twilight sedation

Twilight sedation, or deep IV sedation, places you in what our team describes as a "barely aware, don't care" state. You will have virtually no memory of your session when it is complete.

For patients who have avoided periodontal care out of fear, twilight sedation is often the turning point.

Frequently asked questions about sedation dentistry

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Sedation is a safe and well-established option when administered by certified qualified professionals. At Bloor Yorkville-Periodontics, a medical anesthetist from Humber River Hospital manages your sedation throughout the procedure, and a Registered Nurse monitors you in our recovery area afterward.

Our facility exceeds the certification requirements of both the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

That said, it is important to understand that all medications carry some degree of risk — including commonly used ones. We believe in being open and transparent about this. During your consultation, our specialists will take a thorough medical history, discuss any risk factors specific to you, and answer every question you have. Sedation is only recommended when we are confident it is the right and safe choice for your situation.

What is the difference between deep IV sedation and general anesthesia?

Deep IV sedation produces deep relaxation with virtually no memory of the procedure, but you remain at a level where you could respond if needed. General anesthesia (complete sleep sedation) eliminates consciousness entirely; you are unaware of any treatment from start to finish.

Will I feel pain during sedation?

Sedation is combined with local anesthesia so that you feel no pain during treatment.

Can I have multiple procedures done in one visit?

Yes. This can reduce the total number of visits required and means you only go through the sedation experience once.

How long does sedation last?

This depends on the sedation level and the duration of your procedure. The effects of moderate and twilight sedation can persist for several hours after your appointment. You will need someone to drive you home and remain with you afterward.

How do I know which sedation option is right for me?

We will discuss your options in detail at your consultation. There is no pressure to choose a particular level. Our role is to give you complete information so you can make the decision that feels right for you.
