What is full IV sedation?
If you require lengthy or complex procedures, or need to have multiple treatments completed in a single visit, full IV sedation (deep sedation) offers a deeper level of comfort than oral sedation.
At Bloor-Yorkville Periodontics in Toronto, IV sedation is administered by an anaesthesiologist. IV sedation allows you to be completely unaware during your treatment. You should have no memory from the procedure. When you wake up, your treatment will be done.
When is IV sedation necessary?

Here is what to expect when you come in for treatment under deep sedation:
Step 1: Your consultation and pre-sedation assessment
Before your appointment, we will have a thorough conversation about your medical history, current medications, and any concerns you have about sedation or your procedure.
Our anaesthesiologist will review your health profile to confirm that full sedation is safe for you and to determine the appropriate sedation protocol for your specific needs.
You will receive clear instructions about what to eat and drink in the hours before your appointment. Following these instructions carefully is important for your safety.
Step 2: Arriving for your appointment
You must arrange for a trusted person to drive you to and from your appointment. You will not be able to drive yourself under any circumstances.
When you arrive, our team will prepare you for sedation in a calm and supportive environment. The anaesthesiologist will administer the sedation, and you will gradually and comfortably move into a state of complete sleep.
The process is gentle and carefully monitored from the first moment to the end of your treatment.
Step 3: Your procedure
While you are under deep sedation, our specialists will carry out your treatment. Because you will be relaxed and unaware, our team can work with greater precision and efficiency.
When you wake up, your treatment will be complete.
Step 4: Recovery and going home
After your treatment is complete, you will be continuously monitored by our team. You will be kept comfortable and observed until it is safe for you to leave.
You may feel groggy and tired for several hours after your appointment. Your designated driver must take you home, and you should plan to rest for the remainder of the day. Do not drive, operate machinery, or make important decisions until the following day.
