Background

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are one of the most durable ways to replace a missing or damaged tooth, restoring both the look of your smile and the health of your mouth.

A dental implant works by placing a small medical-grade post into your jawbone, which acts as a replacement for your natural tooth root. Over time, it fuses with the surrounding bone to create a stable, long-lasting foundation. A crown is then placed on top, giving you a tooth that looks, feels, and functions just like a natural tooth.

Beyond aesthetics, implants do a lot of heavy lifting: they can prevent jawbone loss, keep neighbouring teeth from shifting, and help you chew and speak with confidence. Unlike dentures they're a permanent solution, one that's designed to last many years with proper oral care.

Types of dental implants

Every smile is different, and so is every treatment plan. Depending on your bone structure, the number of teeth you're replacing, and your overall oral health, our specialists will recommend the implant type that's right for you.

  • Endosteal implants (standard): These are the most common type dental implants. Small titanium posts are placed directly into the jawbone to create a strong, reliable foundation for a single crown, bridge, or denture.

  • All-on-4 (full-arch) implants: Missing most or all of your teeth? All-on-4 uses just four strategically placed implants to support a full arch of teeth, we can attach a complete set of teeth using only four implant posts.

  • Mini dental implants: Narrower than standard implants, these narrow posts work well if you have a thin jawbone or want to keep your dentures permanent and from moving.

During your consultation, we'll take digital X-rays, assess your bone structure, and walk you through which treatment option best suits your needs.

Our goal is simple: a treatment plan that's tailored to you, with results that can last. Together, we'll choose the right dental implants type to give you a healthy smile!

Our process

Dental implant process at Bloor-Yorkville Periodontics

Replacing a missing tooth is a process, and as specialists in periodontal treatment, we're with you every step of the way. Here's what you can expect during your dental implant treatment.

Step 1: Examination and treatment planning

We'll start by getting a full picture of your dental and medical history, including any medications that may be relevant to your treatment. We'll then carry out a thorough examination of your mouth and jaw, using digital X-rays to evaluate your bone structure and identify the optimal position for your implant.

Once we have completed the examination, we'll walk you through our findings, confirm whether an implant is the right treatment option for you, and the dental implant type that would work best for you.

Step 2: Preparing for your procedure

Your comfort is our priority. Before we begin the procedure, we'll administer a local anesthetic to fully numb the treatment area, so while you may feel some mild pressure during the procedure, you shouldn’t feel any pain.

Once you're comfortable, we'll carefully prepare the implant site in your jawbone, creating a space for the implant post to be placed.

Step 3: Placing the implant

We'll place a small titanium post into your jawbone, which acts as the root of your new tooth. Over the following months, the post undergoes a process called osseointegration, where the surrounding bone gradually heals and fuses with the post, creating a strong, stable foundation that functions much like a natural tooth root.

Step 4: Attaching your replacement tooth

Once osseointegration process is complete and the implant is fully stable, we'll attach a small connector piece called an abutment, which links the post to your replacement tooth. We'll then secure a custom-made crown on top.

The crown will be matched to the colour, shape, and size of your surrounding teeth. The end result should look natural, feel comfortable, and is built to hold up to help you chew and speak with confidence.

Step 5: Final check and aftercare instructions

Before you leave, we'll check your bite to ensure everything is aligned correctly and make any final adjustments needed. We’ll give you detailed aftercare instructions on what to expect after the procedure how to care for your dental implants while you recover, with the right care, dental implants can last for many years.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about dental implants

When should I think about getting a dental implant?

You might need an implant if:

  • You've lost one tooth or more.

  • A tooth is so damaged it can't be fixed.

  • Your dentures slide around or hurt.

  • Eating is hard for you.

  • You don't like smiling because of missing teeth.

If any of this sounds like you, come see us. We'll look at your teeth and help you decide if dental implants are a good treatment option for you.

Does getting an dental implant hurt?

We do everything we can to help keep you comfortable. Before we start, we use local anesthetic to numb your mouth completely.

This means you shouldn’t feel pain during the procedure. Afterward, your mouth might be a little sore, but we'll tell you how to take care of it so you feel better fast.

How long will my dental implant last?

Dental implants can last a very long time. If you take good care of them, they can work for 15 to 25 years or in some cases even longer.

The visible part (the crown) may need a new one after 10 to 15 years from regular use. But the metal part in your jaw usually stays strong for longer.

Important: If your implant feels loose or starts hurting, call us right away. We'll check it to make sure it's okay.

Can a dental implant fall out?

This almost never happens. But an implant might fail if it doesn't attach to your bone correctly or if you get gum disease around it and you may need it replaced. Regular exams and visits help us watch your dental implants and keep them healthy.

Brushing and flossing every day and proper oral hygiene can help keep your dental implant safe and healthy for many years.

Are dental implants better than dentures or bridges?

Dental implants have lots of benefits. They look natural and work like real teeth. They stay in place when you talk or chew and help keep your jaw bone strong too.

We don't need to touch your other teeth to put in an dental implant like we do with a bridge. Dental implants are permanent and can last you many years if you care for them well.

Review 2 of Dental Implant Process at Bloor-Yorkville Periodontics in Toronto

I recently completed a tooth implant with Dr Caudry, which involved going into the sinus cavity to build a foundation for the new tooth post. Dr Caudry took the time to explain my options, answer my questions as this was my first experience with dental surgery. The two procedures were anxiety free, and recovery was fast. If I had to do another, I would not ask anyone else.
